Web Informers Web Informers ©2005 | Search Engines - How Does Excite Work?

Excite

Starting on December 17th, 2001 Excite results were produced from Overture, although apparently not entirely in a bid-sequence. It appears that the top 15 results are in the Overture sequence, and that those in position 16 and higher appear to be additional Overture results except sorted by relevance instead of bid. This will include the "free" Inktomi results reported by Overture if warranted.

Excite is a MetaSearch engine receiving results from Overture, Inktomi, Fast, AskJeeves, Looksmart, about.com, and FindWhat -- just about anybody that is a PPC feed. It is not yet clear how relevance (results sequence) is determined, but it appears to be determined by the algorithms of the other search engines providing the results.

Excite results come from Pay-Per-Click engines, notably Overture for top results followed by Inktomi. Adding a URL and ranking management is achieved thru Overture and Inktomi.

Excite, WebCrawler, and Magellan all use the same database in conducting their searches; therefore, these search engines return the same results.

The following search engines or directories provide content to Excite:
Overture
Inktomi
Fast
AskJeeves
Looksmart

The following search engines receive content from Excite:
Magellan
WebCrawler

WebCrawler and Magellan are virtual clones of the Excite results, generally with a different presentation on the same information.
